I agree no A/V is 100% perfect and I do hear a lot of good things about Avast and Kapersky but a web host I worked for used Nod32. Eventually I tried it at home and have gotten a few friends hooked on it as well. IMO it's the best for your money - small memory footprint, fast scanning, true heuristic scanning (meaning it has the best chance of detecting new viruses in the wild before other A/V programs).

I don't recommend using AVG as I've had a number of trojans slip past it - thank god I was using an software firewall that monitors outgoing traffic, otherwise the trojan would've called home. AVG is also a resource hog, as are Trend-Micro, Panda, Norton, etc... Norton's a good way to pay to slow down your computer.

Nod32 from eset.com gets my vote.

I've been using the Internet since it's been available and I have yet to install an antivirus program on any of my computers. I use a hardware firewall, though, combined with safe practices while surfing the Internet.

* I don't surf the Internet from PC-based computers, I use the MacBook with Safari for that (it's not prone to picking up viruses).
* I know the hot-keys to kill the browser window (or the entire browser program itself) and I pay attention to what's happening before my eyes. If I suspect foul play I kill the browser.
* I avoid sites that I think might be prone to viruses and trojan horses.
* I don't click on popups, ever. I close them with Alt-F4 on the PC or Command-W on the Mac.
* I never select options to download things that were unsolicited by myself.
* If I did feel compelled to download and install something from the Internet I'd review what was in the package so downloaded before installing it.
