I don't know the numbers, but I do know most major sites use Linux servers. I've also heard that Microsoft uses Linux for certains things.

We started offering Linux 5 years ago and added Windows to our hosting plans 2 years ago. Our Windows account are about to surpase our Linux accounts. There is a bigger market for Windows and even though most people can host on Linux they think since they have a windows pc at home their hosting must be the same.

Linux - Is Quite Popular for users who do WebHosting or some sort of format
Windows - The high percentage of this usage is for Gameservers i.e Half Life/Counter Strike... as many people prefer that Windows is better to run it rather than Linux.

Linux is cost effective than windows because it is free and open source, it's much more secure and has more stability than windows. In hosting business the market share of linux is high compared to windows because of these features. Windows is expensive and is good for personal or home use.

Linux have many advantages over Windows in price, performance and security issues. About market share not sure but Linux should have wider share than W.

Othes than the Windows OS itself costly, you hardly find free scripts for Windows. For Linux, you have a ton of goodies.
