Best CP's out there?
I've used cPanel - WHM, and Plesk.
Plesk is ok, it was a long time ago when I used it. I loved it, first cp I ever used. Then I got to use cPanel and I feel in love.
I probable wont use anything else, unless it has more features then cPanel. That's a pretty hard wall to clime imo.

I currently use Webmin. It's free and has plenty of functionality. Its not quite as user friendly as cPanel, but it's quite powerful and does what I need.

Webmin is an opensource, therefore you cannot demand too much from it. I used to operate a shell server, in this case, webmin was the best.
I've got another web hosting server, in this case, cPanel is the best. Desite variety of security flaws, it's powerful-ness, user-friendlyness, tons of scripts and structure had made me fall in love with it too. There should be no other questions asked that cPanel is the most popular control panel out there, *nix web hosting customers will look for, although other control panels take up a fair share of market too.
I thought there's no BEST control panel as a unison and standalone, it takes combination of what OS you're using, targetted market, industry, pricing and many many more. My closing will perhaps be, no best control panel but a most suitable control panel. Without considering other factor, cPanel will be my ultimate choice.

A long time ago I had a host with a bad control panel, it was like phpmyadmin, but not for SQL. Ever since then I have used and offered cpanel and WHM to my clients. I think its the best and will always be the best.

Im also a fan of cPanel - to be honest I havent used Ensim nor Plesk for over two years now. I did not like them much back then, but to be fair I have heard that they have updated a lot of elements of their panel.
I was also a big fan of virtualCP [MCHost] and HostGui [JaguarHost] when they were first announced eons ago - now VCP just redirects to a PPC engine and HostGui has been acquired by another company [who has stated they have no intentions of releasing it].
Oh well - I remember it was Rackshack choosing the [then] new Ensim 3.0 and HostGui's excitement in WHT that caused cPanel to get off its arse and update a lot of elements. Competition is good

I kind of like CPanel. But really, I prefer to admin my websites by hand on my own dedicated server

Looks as though cPanel takes the lead with most everyone. I figured as much.
I just like to hear other peoples experiences with control panels and so on.

Well, doing it via CLI console is definitely at best, the only thing that can fail you is the OS. With control panel despite the fact that you can do things slightly faster, but it do not eliminate the fact that control panels, however expensive or good it can be, it's subjected to flaws all-rounded.
I've used phpmyadmin sometime ago, in fact, that was the first control panel i had when i first touched web hosting. It's nice to use it personally, but definitely not the way to go if you think far. I've tried plesk too, it was version 5 then. It had tons of problems, emails, sub domains and such. I heard about plesk 7 and tried the "root" control panel of plesk 7, not exactly fascinating and very not user friendly. As for ensim which i tried roughly 6 months ago, i thought i should just shut down my browser.

Personally, I think CPanel is heavily overrated. I find it bloated, and unwieldly. There is just so much crap in it, and the interface is poorly designed - especially on the WHM side of it.
To be honest, Plesk 7 is starting to look really good to me. It gets extra points because it has a Windows version.

I think the design of cpanel and WHM is good for newbs, and for your clients to have cpanel and not have to explain everything to them is always good. I agree it does need work. Some people I know like all the extras they get, true you dont need them but hey.
