Underground data centers are good for areas that are prone to natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornado. They can cost more because of the additional features that are necessary because of their location. Now, if you can find an underground location and you can modify it for your needs than you might be able to recover some of the costs by offering higher prices because of that added security benefit.

They mostly seem like a marketing ploy - they are like a giant underground lair.
What price advantages you get from the cooler air, you pay for dehumidifying, corrosion of equipment, water leaks, and more.
Well currently it's not practical but may be in future if human succeed to develop better water cooling system without consuming much electricity then it may be great idea and I think it would also keep the temperature stable than the normal data centers.
Very true indeed, razordave. Underground datacenters may seem more secure, but after all, underground places too have doors![]()
There is underground DC's already, do a quick search! I do like the idea.
There is a lot of Underground DC's in Sweden, Russia, etc.
They usually use old war bunkers for data center

About costs, not sure.
They are protected from most of the natural and man-made disasters and are much more expensive than others.
Cost wise it is not practical because of its features but I do agree for places with a lot of hurricanes , it is a good idea and secured. In the future I think it would also be a trend to have data center underground.
